It is the last Friday of the Month, and that means a new issue of the Friendly Future Digest. Here is what I learnt and discussed this month on the podcast.
Imagine a healthcare system where the emphasis is on keeping you healthy for longer, rather than treating your illness. This is the main thinking of where biotech is heading in the not so distant future.
With transhumanism, aging is treated like a disease and human life is extended beyond our current life expectancy of 80 years. With research in this emerging scientific field, we can expect to live to 150 and beyond. Where you may ask? Until the age when you are satisfied that your existence has been fulfilled. Last year we have extended the life of lab rats. So theoretically we can do the same with humans.
Transhumanism is not limited to extending life expectancy. It can be applied to giving us superpowers like night vision or having chips implanted into us, to interact with the digital universe, i.e. the metaverse.
Another aspect of biotech, that I have found interesting is the state of genetic testing today. Nearly 30 years since we commenced the human genome program, for the majority of us, we use DNA tests to track down an Irish cousin. Without thinking about the other uses. One such proposed use is a DNA passport, where healthcare providers are able to issue you with a bespoke medical treatment, based on your genes. Eliminating adverse reactions to drugs and ensuring the best possible outcome.
If this said DNA passport is backed by blockchain technology in the future, it means no one can alter it and the passport can travel the world with you. Meaning in the not so distant future if you get sick or injured abroad the right course of action is easier to follow. Now would that be something?
